Palm Ecosystem: Do or Die

One thing plaguing webOS is that it has no ecosystem. Microsoft has Windows, Office, Xbox, Zune: Apple has Macs, Snow Leopard, iPod, iPhone, iTunes: Google has Google Search, Chrome Browser, Chrome OS (in the works,) Andriod OS, and too many others to mention. Palm just makes phones. In today's world of multimedia, Palm has to find a way to push the idea of multitasking one step further. Palm has the best multitasking of any smartphone currently on the market, but is lacking in apps (just stating a fact) which can be considered another version of multitasking. Furthermore, Palm has to accept that if it wants to compete with the likes of Apple, Google, and potentially Microsoft, it needs to create and nurture it's own multitasking multimedia ecosystem.

Which way Palm gets there is up for debate. Personally, I think Palm should have a webOS sync site that opens within a browser or as a stand alone app that opens up a portal and uses the desktop in which it provides a myriad of functions, fully customizable and using the same cards system and launcher as webOS (obviously, you'll be able to move them with a mouse.) webOSync (as I'd like to call it,) can have the same icons: look: and feel as your phone making it easier to use and reducing the learning curve.

For starters, it could store your downloaded music from Amazon so you could listen to it while at your computer and save your phone's battery life. Same thing goes for all and any game apps you've downloaded from the Apps Catalog. In tadem, imagine, 25 cent ringtones and alerts. Palm can create a ringtone and alert catalog mimicking the Apps Catalog. Go even further with ringtone and alert themes for 99 cents.

How about opening your bookmarks in card view, as in Google Voice, where you could send and receive text messages on your computer and, again, save battery life. Update your Twitter and Facebook accounts. Click on the Yahoo icon and open it to do your emailing chores from a jumbo size card that takes up about a third of the screen or window and you could use your full keyboard.

Quickly, drag and drop music, photos, videos, memos and so on on webOSync SYNC card(s), hit the SYNC button and voila! What's on your phone is on webOSync and what's sync-able on webOSync goes to your phone. Moreover, those music, photo, and video files downloaded to webOSync can also be dragged and dropped into their respective folders on your computer.

There are many, almost endless, ideas and opportunities for a webOSync portal. Hopefully, Palm is working towards competing with big guys and since they don't have the big guy money, Palm can use what's out there by proxy.

Remember, no one thing is going to save Palm. Palm has to fight from all fronts: advertising: product lines: apps: updates: and an ecosystem (with multitasking multimedia) to name a few.

Just had an idea: what if, or when, the Palm Pre comes out with an On Screen Keyboard it's symbols and number's pad were on either side of the qwerty keyboard and you could just swipe to the left or right to bring them up and swipe back to return to the qwerty keyboard like in the apps panels?

On Screen Keyboard?

The one thing the Palm Pre is still missing is an On Screen Keyboard. It's the number two most requested on the PreNooz poll behind Voice Command. Surprisingly, most Pre users thought we wouldn't have to wait so long before Palm caught up on this standard feature on smartphones.

While trying the calculator app on the Pre, I was pleasantly surprised at how smoothed it worked. That led me to thinking, "Why can't Palm expand on it and give us a great On Screen keyboard?" I don't understand why we don't have one yet.

So I ask, "Why don't we have an On Screen Keyboard""

Will today be the day I've been waiting for? Rumors on the web have speculated that at the Mobile World Congress (MWC), Adobe will announce it's mobile flash player will officially be available for download as an app for smartphones. Also, that on the same day it will come to webOS and other top smartphone platforms excluding the iPhoneOS.
Apple has stubbornly refused to open the iPhoneOS to flash, fearing it can harm it's apps store's bottom line, due to the many games that are available free through flash. This will make phones like the Palm Pre give a more fuller web experience.

Sprint announced that GetJar's 60,000 apps will be free to "ALL" it's customers but it does not mention Palm's webOS and the Pre (Plus) or Pixi (Plus.)

A news released on Sprint's website mentions "RIM BlackBerry(R) and Windows Mobile devices" but fails to include Palm's devices or phones.

Turns out my friend the Apple fanboy admitted that his iPhone GS' battery life has been lasting longer because the screen brightness is set "very dim."

He will not tell me if this is his doing or Apple's solution for a longer battery life.

So, I checked my roommate's new 32g iTouch, and again, the screen is set to very dim. He did not set it to "very dim."

Now, should Palm reset the brightness on their screens?

When the Palm Pre was introduce it was a sensation. Apple could not risk the iPhone's new competition. Thus, the iPhone GS came out shortly after. It had many features iPhone users had been pleading for and subsequently through updates matched some of the Palm Pre's features making the iPhone a better smartphone: iPhone users have the Plam Pre to thank for that.

Now, rumor has it that Apple will bring multitasking to the iPhone to catch up with the Plam Pre's innovative feature. Will iPhone users "thank the Palm Pre for that?"
